Hargreaves admits he disagrees with United’s decision to release Rashford.

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves believes the loss of Marcus Rashford is a major blow given Ruben Amorim’s style of play.

“I don’t know if anyone wants to play a counter-attack style of game. Especially at Manchester United. You have to attack, you have to dominate.” Hargreaves told Premier League Productions after United’s 3-1 win at Southampton.

“That’s why Erik ten Hag got the job, because he played like that at Ajax. A team with possession. That’s why he dropped David de Gea to bring in [Andre] Onana, to get a goalkeeper who can play with the ball.”

“But it’s not concrete, United are at their best on the counter. Ten Hag’s best form is on the counter, like Ole Gunnar (Solskjaer).”

“If you look at United under Amorim against Liverpool, Arsenal and City. Where they’ve been good at it – counter-attacks, I think when they play with two central midfielders they end up with (Toby) Collyer and Bruno Fernandes. You don’t have the ball and that’s against the 20th-placed team in the league.”

“I think there are a lot of things to improve, the goalkeeper is in place. Defensively they are not bad but they have to manage the midfield and they have to manage the strikers. But obviously losing Marcus Rashford is a big deal. Talking about Garnacho potentially going as well, it’s a concern.”
